Shoot, I should have done one of these a while ago!
Hi, my name is vlad, and I'm chronically distracted.
I'm relatively new to Tolkien's world in the grand scheme of things, though it's all had such an impact on my life that it seems like it's been forever. I had a nice copy of LOTR for a long time before I ever had any interest in actually reading it - it was actually seeing the previews for the first movie that caught me. I remember seeing Aragorn and thinking, "Hey, that's that guy who play Lucifer in "The Prophecy"... and a fan was born. (Yes, there is something wrong with me.) Actually, as much as I enjoyed the movies, it was a dream about Boromir somewhere between the release of the second and third that got me truly obsessed - no it wasn't as smutty as you'd expect... but it got there once I started thinking about it while I was awake.
And from there... a fanfic writer was born. I toyed with reading it as a *very* guilty pleasure off and on for a while, along with my more widely socially accepted fan behavior, of course, and eventually discovered that it could in fact be quite good (and also discovered, quite usefully, what a Mary Sue is). At some point I started toying with writing it as well (starting with the story that came from the dream, which is still very much unfinished), and socializing around the writing, and now most of my acquaintances online are fanfic writers, and I have a whole herd of partially filled notebooks, and a hard drive sprinkled with finished drabbles and half-finished smut.
Somewhere in there, obviously, I read Tolkien's actual works, and I actually enjoyed reading the Silm and the LOTR appendices more than LOTR itself because of all the history and languages and alphabets and lineages and oh god the MAPS!, and that probably indicates a condition for which I should be medicated. The stories themselves were wonderful too, of course, and nothing else would have worked without them... but oh, the maps... *drool*
In terms of writing, I have extra special interest in Boromir (it's all his fault I started this, after all), which extends to Gondor in general and even all the way back to Numenor. I'm also into the First Age, especially the Feanorians and other various trouble makers, and of those I'm especially fond of Maedhros.
