This is what is being sent to new members as of 1/14/2010. When they reply to the email, the membership is complete and they may post freely here.
Welcome to the Garden of Ithilien writers workshop.
This is just a reminder of our rules before I approve your membership so you can post. You must reply to this email before your membership can be finalized.
Making new friends here is exciting, and we are always happy to welcome in new members.
GoI Members are expected to both give and accept honest comments, as well as praise. We know that none of us are perfect writers, and we like getting detailed, thoughtful analyses on our stories. We're also good at offering unlimited support and encouragement to our members.
When you post something in progress for crit, we will give you give actual, specific edits, with suggestions on how to improve or long rambling comments. We'll point out not only if you've got simple things like spelling or grammar errors, but perhaps plot holes, characterization issues, POV slips, and maybe other things you may, or may not, not have realized were problems. We don't want our members to all write alike - and we certainly don't! - but we want everyone's stories to be internally consistent and the best they can be.
We are slash free, which means that you may not post slash for crit or beta work. However, if you want to recommend the occasional slash story, you may do so.
We are a drama free zone. We have been quite remarkably free of problems, so I do not expect that you will have any. However, if you should ever have a problem with a member, please let the admins (either LadyA, who owns the group, and/or Sulriel or myself, who are moderators) know first. You can reach us through the links in the "members" tab at the top every GoI page, or our emails are on this message. We will try and resolve any problems quickly, before they escalate into drama.
As soon as you reply to this email your membership will be approved and you will be able to post freely. We expect you to participate. We're all friendly and chatty and kind and supportive, so leap right in anywhere. We usually hang out in the Coffee House area and it's a good place to start. After 300 posts, you will have moderator privileges on your own boards, so you can edit and/or delete the posts there. Until then, if you want something deleted, you'll have to ask a moderator to do it for you.
A few members have password protected private areas for their erotica or original stories and there are a few places that are not accessible to members with fewer than 300 posts.
If you accept the terms of membership, you must reply to this email. Please remember that just lurking in the Garden is not allowed, and, while we do understand and allow for real-life issues if we are aware of them, you'll receive notice that your membership will be cancelled if you do not participate regularly. If, after trying us out, you decide that you don't have the time to participate right now, or we're just not the right place for you, please let us know, and we'll make you either inactive until you have the time or we can cancel your membership without prejudice.
If you let me know what you want your boards named, I'll set them up at the same time as I approve the membership. Members usually need three board names - one for their main board with two sub-boards, their WIP threads, and a place for shorter pieces called their 100s. We give special recognition to members who write at least a 100 words a day for 100 days in a row. For example, my main board is called "Gwynnyd's Graffiti," my WIP board is called "Gwynnyd's Growlings" and my 100s is called "Gwynnyd's Stumbling Starts." Lia calls hers, "Lia's Bestiary," "Lia's Beasts" and "Lia's Stories." So whatever naming scheme suits you, just let me know.
I look forward to getting to know you better.
