I'm recycling my "Just Arrived" intro here!
I'm a latecomer to the world of Tolkien, having only discovered it when my daughter took us to see "The Two Towers" when it debuted. Haldir's death suckered me in -- it just wasn't fair! And I had to find out what all happened before and after that. ( Even though I was relieved to find out Hal didn't even go to Helm's Deep, in the book!)
The Silmarillion finished me off. I became enamoured of the Elves, and their rebellion and sad history in Middle Earth. Especially that crackpot Feanor and his seven sons. My personal favorites are Maedhros (BIG time!) ;D, Macalaure and Caranthir. (I know, that last one is strange, but it's all Haleth's fault, due to a little story called "Blundering through Beleriand") Other most favorite Elves are Finrod, Glorfindel, Beleg, Haldir, Inglor and Aegnor.
Although I've been a writer in one form or another for half a century -- starting with drawing on the walls, and picture stories - before I learned that words could work just as well, I never thought about writing fanfic until a couple of summers ago, when Haldir began to haunt me. I started a "Haldir-was-only-mostly-dead, not-all-dead!" story that will most likely never see the light of day to shut him up.
Then the Feanorians started in on me, and you know what they are! The one I'll probably post here for your delectation - and valuable input -- was inspired by a collision of drive-time daydreams, fascination with Montana, and Cajun/Zydeco music -- and features Maedhros, and a wormhole.
While I am drawn mainly to the Elves, I do also admire the other peoples of Middle Earth (with the exception of trolls, orks, and balrogs) and am not entirely lost to Rohan, so be comforted, Rohirrim afficionados! (My Haldir's girlfriend's sister-in-law was from Rohan. If that helps.)
In reality, which I try to escape regularly, I have a long-suffering husband, and three grown children, two rapidly growing grandsons -- and two wild, wild Westie dogs. I was a journalist for 23 years - for local rags, mainly, and had one inspirational romance novel published (1985, 1992) before the company decided not to continue its romance line and my husband told me to get "a real job" . That's when I veered off into journalism.
I was involuntarily retired - "overqualified"- a few years ago and found it's not so bad after all, 'cause now I can write the all the fun stuff I used to think about when I was writing the work stuff!!
I hate housework, love history, spent thiry years as a Revolutionary War re-enactor (as a Brit - I surrendered at Yorktown ), and have recently revived an old interest in one-of-a-kind doll making, 1/6th scale (Barbie-Ken size), particularly Elf action figures.
Thanks for letting me into your Garden to play, and I'll see you all at the coffee shoppe or sundry threads herein!
