Wasn't I trying to get to Aglarond? Ah, well--Gimli's bound to show up sooner or later.
I'm another long-time Tolkien devotee, but I have only recently succumbed to the temptation to write in his universe, after long travails in other fictional realms, including my own. My muse was in dire need of a vacation, so we’ve dropped in on Arda . . . and since the muse is happy here, Tolkien fanfic is probably stuck with me for a while.
To let you know what you’re dealing with, there’s a Neanderthal skull cast up there on the top shelf wearing a baseball cap that reads, “Plays in the dirt”; and I am currently waiting for a book to come in from Interlibrary Loan that is supposed to have the best basic description of pre-industrial ironworking yet written. Trained as an anthropologist and archaeologist, with a specialization in Iron Age and Early Medieval Britain, I find myself very much at home in the fragmentary and sometimes contradictory texts of HoME. Oh, yes; I am very much a follower of Aulë.
Having long enjoyed the freedom of my own fictional universe, I prefer to write on the edges of Tolkien’s own work—he left so many blank spots on the map for us to Niggle in. You can find my developing Dûnhebiad Cycle over on Henneth-Annun, where the Ered Luin meets prehistoric Scotland and I can indulge in my fondness for Dwarves.
Though I have strong and often decided opinions that are reflected in my writing, I love to read other peoples’ interpretations of Tolkien’s work as much as I love to share my laboriously acquired lore. Thank you, Gandalf’s Apprentice, for the invitation to the Garden!
