Hi, everyone. I came late to LOTR, not discovering it until I rented FOTR in November before ROTK came to theaters in December. All this because of an online game that kept posing questions about Hobbits that I couldnt answer. Thank you Zealot Trivia!
I consider all that I write Alternate Universe, since I havent read the books, but I have finally made it as far as Lothlorien in my reading. If only my Real Life was better organized! Sigh. But I do research (I have over 15 Tolkien books!) and find myself buying quite a variety of books at used books stores: herbal medicine; dealing with grief; the almanac, etc to use for general information in my stories. If people could see what I carry with me, they'd wonder what real life horrors I've been hiding all these years!
The first fan fiction I read was Hercules or Xena. I wrote a Star Trek years ago, but a friend I showed it to acted like I was seriously strange, so I abandoned writing. Later I did a couple of UFO (SHADO) fics that are at SHADO Library. I think I now have 28 LOTR stories on fanfiction.net/~nautika
I love to beta, but I am already committed to two fairly prolific writers, so I cant do anyone else full time. I'm looking forward to doing some reading and reviewing in the WIP folders, even though I normally prefer to stick to completed stories. Abandoned stories make me sad. I think there should be some way of 'adopting them out' to be finished by someone else if Real Life prevents the author from completing what they started.
When I write, I obsess on angst, but try to balance it with some humor and have written mainly one-shots so far. The others just take too long with my RL responsibilites. A sequel I'm working on now is only in its 8th chapter and will be 2 years old in February! I have another multi-chapter started and 6 in outline or note form. I also have a narrated project I hope to post to the internet that was inspired by a Teitho Challenge.
Movie Boromir is 'my guy', but I mainly write Elrond, Estel and the twins, with Legolas making his debut mid-way through my 19 chapter fic "That Precious Link". He is featured in both mult-chapter WIPs as well as a couple of the ones in note form. I also have one short fic on audio and one published in a second language. I didnt do either one, but was flattered that they were used. I'm not award winning or anything, but that keeps the wolves at bay on fanfiction.net. Grin.
Since RL makes it difficult at times for me to keep up with my reading, I started a LOTR Prompt group. There are prompts only (no reviews or chatting) to make it easier to find the Prompts to read. Many of the Prompts are under 500 words, so it's a quicker read and the writing is normally just as good as with longer fics.
groups.yahoo.com/group/lotrprompts
I also co-moderate another Yahoo group that only posts the completed fic, but am taking a break from it for a short time due to RL.
I wanted to start a Reading Group when I began reading LOTR, but too few people had time and I've set that idea aside.
I will probably start a WIP folder here, but my fic will have been reviewed by my beta before I post it.
Feel free to email me (these things don't seem to receive replies) at nau_tika@yahoo.com
