I am a long time lover of Tolkien. I suppose part of the attraction is he creates such a black and white world for us. Good and evil are clearly delineated and one either comes down on one side or the other. I love his version of the world’s creation in The Silmarillion. Reading his works leaves me with such a deep feeling of bittersweets joy. I think we all long for the wisdom and purity represented by the elves, or at I suppose I should say most elves. I believe we all wish our world were so uncomplicated. I believe all great works of literature awaken such feelings in us, a desire to be better than we are, a striving for what is right. It was encouraging to me that so many were touched by the movies, for I feel they brought that quality of the books to film. I think everyone has a defining book in their life, or at least everyone who reads. The book that makes one realize that the world is bigger than what their own small place in it encompasses. That book for me was came when I was about nine and read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Reading Tolkien in high school only reinforced and solidified those feelings. So, I am happy to have found other writers and readers who share some of the same joy I do in his works.
